Jacks Roll Over Bulldogs
January 3rd, 2005 - Warren, Arkansas
Going into the night of January 3rd, 2006, the Warren Senior High Lumberjacks carried a record of 8-3. The Star City Bulldogs looked to overcome Coach Anthony Avery's mighty Jacks. However, they looked in the wrong place. The orange and black prevailed, winning by the final tally of 54-39.
The first quarter started off slow, but soon had its first points of the game when Sophomore Tee Lexing of Warren drained a shot from beyond the arc. With 5:08 left in the remaining quarter, Warren was ahead by three. The first eight minutes seemed to be very close, but if it had been a boxing match, the score card would have went to Warren. They left at the break with the lead.
The second quarter was, however, much closer. With 2:49 remaining in the half the Jacks lead 24-18. Later in the quarter, the Lumberjacks showed signs of pulling away. Offensive rebounding was a major benefit. The team added to the stats with ten total offensive boards and two defensive. Junior five-sport athlete Dusty Hardin attempted a deep three with two seconds left, but failed. The half ended with the Jacks still on top by a score of 31-18.
There wasn't much to report on the third quarter. The Jacks still went hard to the boards, helping to keep their lead intact. The third ended the same way it began, with Warren in control.
Fourth quarter rebounds were very hard to find for the Bulldogs, as Warren's Gerald Thompson, Chanc Davis, A.J. Avery, Dusty Hardin, Derrick Bullard, Tee Lexing, Jaren Jefferson, Moorehead Jordan, Jarius Wright, and Dennen Cuthbertson all contributed to the 54-39 victory of the Star City Bulldogs.
Warren Senior A.J. Avery commented that, "The team came in on Monday, but had a terrible practice. On Tuesday, however, they showed up with the right mind frame, ready to make up for the day before." Avery, who lead the team in scoring also said, "I got off to a slow start, but after about two minutes I found my groove." Warren's victory was partially credited to the outstanding rebounding. "We knew their main player was on the bench during part of the second half. That meant everyone, even the guards and wings, would get a great opportunity inside," said Avery. With two assists tonight Avery said, "The first thing I do when I get the ball inside is look for an open teammate. With two people usually on me, someone will be open." The Lake Village Beavers are coming to town this Friday night to take on the Lumberjacks! Everyone come out and support the Jacks!!!
