Jacks Shoot Cardinals Out Of The Sky
By Rob Reep
Warren- Monday, April 3, 2006
Swinging at bad pitches can destroy a players batting average. On Monday, April 3, 2006 those bad decisions at the plate almost came back to haunt the Warren Lumberjacks. However, they were able to come out of the conference contest alive. The Jacks won by the score of 4-3 over the Dollarway Cardinals. That victory moves them to 4-0 in conference play.
Daniel Robinson got the start on the hill for the home team. He would pitch great for seven innings of play. The first inning was awesome defensively for the Jacks. They sat the Cardinals down scoreless with one hit given up.
In the bottom of the first the Jacks would get runners on first and second with two outs. John Roper would be picked off at first to help the Cards escape unharmed after one.
In the second the Jacks again held the redbirds scoreless. The bottom of the second gave the first lead of the game to the Lumberjacks. They led 1-0.
In the third, the Jacks scored another run to make it 2-0. The Cards didn't fall down and die. They came back in the fourth and cut the Jacks lead to 2-1.
Later in the game the Jacks would tack on two more runs. Their largest lead of the game would be 4-1. Daniel Robinson continued to pitch to the Jacks liking.
In the seventh inning things got a little scary. Dollarway put up two more runs to again cut the Jacks lead to 4-3. With a runner on second, and only one out, Dollarway hit a line drive shot to the right-center gap. Warren Junior Dusty Hardin leaped and made a diving catch. The runner on second obviously thought the ball would get by Hardin. He had already rounded third. Hardin comely got up and threw a strike to Senior A.J. Avery who was standing on second. Avery doubled up the runner and Warren went home with a victory.
Interview with Wesley Cogdill
I spoke with Senior Wesley Cogdill after the game. He commented on Hardin's magnificent catch." It was probably the greatest catch I've ever seen in high school baseball. If he dives and misses it, it would have most likely resulted in an inside the park homerun. What I thought was impressive was the throw to A.J. on second. Dusty unleashed his cannon on that one."
The Jacks were not very selective at the plate on Monday. Cogdill said, " We are going to practice, practice, practice for the next two days. We just swung at too many high pitches. I swung at some bad pitches myself. We have to become smarter at the plate."
The Jacks moved to 4-0 in conference play with the win over Dollarway. I asked Wesley if the Jacks felt they could win the conference. He replied, " Of course! We're the Lumberjacks. I think we will come together and take the 8AAA. We're just going to take it one step at a time. If we improve our overall play, and our pitching comes through like it did today, we will be fine. In fact, I have a pretty good feeling we're going to win Thursday."
The Jacks are scheduled to face the Fordyce Redbugs on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at 4:30 p.m. Come out and support your Jacks.
