Lumberjack Defend Dual State Title

Saturday, January 29, 2006

54-52. Two points were all that separated the Lumberjacks of Warren and the hometown Dragons of Junction City in the 2006 Dual State Tournament. Those two points just happened to fall in Warren's favor, allowing the 'Jacks to take home their second consecutive Dual State title.

The ballgame, much like the Lafayette County contest, was a free-for-all. The 'Jacks and Dragons traded blows for four quarters before Warren could finally throw it's knockout punch.

Down 52-51 inside ten seconds to the hosting Dragons, Warren's star senior A.J. Avery did what big-time players are accustom to doing. He made a big-time play. Avery stole the Junction City inbound pass and frantically drove the lane. Avery fired up one shot, which was off target. The senior got the offensive board and put it back up, getting fouled in the process. Luckily, the shot fell and provided Warren with a one point, 53-52 lead. Avery stepped to the line and drained his free throw to give Warren a two point lead.

Through the confusion of the steal, shot, and foul, time had ran out on the game clock. The official decided to place 0.1 second on the clock. This allowed Junction City the opportunity to throw up a prayer. Luck wasn't on there side as the ball was turned over and time elapsed.

Warren's leading scorers were Greg Childs who dropped 24 points and A.J. Avery with 18.  Junction City's James Anderson, a hot-shot junior with tons of recruiting attention, finished 29 points and seven rebounds to go along with two blocks.  Jon Arender had 10 points while Daniel Hopson added 9 for the Dragons. The Lumberjacks take on the Drew Central Pirates on Tuesday, January 31, 2006.
