Late Innings Prove Fatal For Jacks
By Rob Reep
Thursday, March 30, 2006-Crossett, Arkansas
Baseball is a funny sport. Many times a game can be decided by one or two plays that last only a few seconds. This was the case yesterday for the Warren Lumberjacks. They lost to the Crossett Eagles by the final of 7-6.
Daniel Robinson got the start on the mound for the Jacks. He lasted five innings and gave up only two runs. Sophomore John Roper came in at the beginning of the bottom of the sixth inning. The first batter reached on an error by Matt Pace at third, the second hitter got a base hit, and then Roper walked and hit the next batters before being pulled in favor of Bryan Church. Church came in with the bases loaded and the score at 6-3. The first batter he faced hit a grand slam on an outside pitch and that made the score 7-6. Warren was unable to score in the top of seventh and lost the game.
The Jacks had the game in control as they went up 4-0 in the top of the third off a Matt Pace two run double. Wesley Cogdill and Pace later scored in the inning. The Jacks were able to scratch out one more run for a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Robinson gave up a two-run homer in the inning and Crossett pulled within 5-2. The Jacks responded with one run that set the score at 6-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.
This non-conference setback puts the Jacks at 5-6 overall, but they remain 3-0 in conference play with a key showdown against the Dollarway Cardinals on Monday. Expect to see Reggie Lee on the mound for the Cardinals.
The Jacks face the Dollarway Cardinals in their fourth conference match on Monday, April 3, 2006 at 4:00 p.m.
