Pace Powers Jacks Past Dragons

By Dennen Cuthbertson

Junction City- Tuesday, April 11, 2006

The Warren Lumberjacks headed to Junction City Tuesday for a non-conference showdown with the Dragons.  If you had followed both Lumberjack baseball and basketball the past couple of years you would know that Warren seems to own Junction City in these sports.  Coach Avery has led the basketball team to two straight Dual State tournament titles and defeated the Dragons both years in route to these championship.  Coach Cuthbertson's teams have been able to defeat the Dragons the past couple of years as well.  This year we have Matt Pace to thank for this streak's survival.

Michael Green led off the game with an infield single and scored the game's first run in the top of the first off a wild pitch.  The rest of the Jacks seem to be bewildered by Junction City's starting pitcher Jon Arender.  That came to an end when Matt Pace hit a towering solo shot over the left field wall in the third inning to make it 2-0 Lumberjacks.

Daniel Robinson seemed to have the Junction City hitters confused as well and continued to pitch great.  Pace came up again and hit a two run shot over the left field fence to make it 4-0 Jacks.  Things got shaky as the Dragons were able to cut it to 4-2 heading into the seventh inning.  The Jacks weren't able to put any more runs on the board so Pace came in to pitch and Robinson went to first for the bottom of the seventh.  He looked like his old self pitching and was able to sit the Dragons down and close the game for a 4-2 Warren win.

Daniel Robinson picked up the win for the Jacks on the mound while Pace was credited with the save.  Pace obviously led the Jacks at the plate with his two monstrous shots and 3 RBI's.  Green, Bryan Church, and Wesley Cogdill all had singles as well.  This was a scary game for the Jacks because other than Robinson and Pace the Jacks seemed out of it.  They had four errors in the field and only a handful of hits but they got the job done.  The Jacks improve to 9-7 overall and remain 6-0 in conference play.  The Jacks last regular season game will be against this same team so hopefully the streak will continue then.

The Lumberjacks also won the B game 8-4.  Moorehead Jordan hit a homerun for the Jacks.  Jarren Jefferson, Jared Wagnon, and Taylor Wood all had hits in the game.  Matt Young pitched all five innings for his second complete game in B game action.  He also pitched a complete game against Sheridan Saturday as the Jacks won that B game 7-0.

The Jacks are scheduled to play the Lake Village Beavers on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 4:00 P.M. Come out and support your Jacks.
