Sonic
Invitational Title Stays With Host Redbugs
Saturday, January 14, 2006-Warren, Arkansas
The Warren Jr. Lady Jacks made the short trip
to Fordyce Saturday evening for the Championship game of Fordyce Jr. High's
Sonic Invitational Tournament, striving to continue the improvement they
have shown in past few weeks.
The Jr. Lady Jacks, who recieved a first round bye, knocked off the Hamburg
Lady Lions by a score of 41-32 to advance from the semifinals. It was the
second victory over Hamburg in three days for the Jr. girls. The Jr. girls
opponent for the 6:00 PM Championship tilt was the hosting Fordyce Jr. Lady
Bugs. Fordyce defeated AA schools Camden-Harmony Grove and Bearden to
advance.
The Jr. Lady Jacks, who started Freshmen Shanique Rhodes, Shakalia Edwards,
Tawanata Marshall, Kawanta Marshall, and Christine Jackson saw the Lady Bugs
win the tipoff and raced to a 15-5 lead at halftime. The only scoring for
Warren came from resevers Whitney Howard and Brandi Harvey. Howard knocked
down a three-pointer and Harvey drained two free throws late in the second
period.
The halftime buzzer signified the start of the Shanique Rhodes' Show for the
Jr. Lady Jacks. Rhodes quickly scored two points to open the second half and
hit another shot later in the third to provide Warren with their only points
of the period, resulting in a 22-9 deficit.
The fourth began with Brandi Harvey knocking down a jumper for the first Jr.
Lady Jack points of the quarter, helping her team claw back into the
ballgame. Of course, the six points Shanique Rhodes dropped in the final
frame also helped. While the fourth quarter saw Warren outscore the Lady
Bugs 8-5, they were unable to completly erase their 13 point deficit, losing
by a final score of 27-17.
The loss left the Jr. Lady Jacks with the Sonic Invitational runner-up
trophy, while Fordyce took home the title of 2006 Sonic Jr. High
Invitational Champions. Shanique Rhodes lead all Lady Jack scorers with
10 points. Brandi Harvey had four points and Whitney Howard had three, off of
1/2 shooting from behind the arc. The Jr. Girls have a two-week layoff
before taking the floor against the Dumas Lady Bobcats in their next to last
regular season 8AAA conference contest.
