Warren Wins First Of Season

Drew Central - Monday, March 6, 2006

The Lumberjack baseball club won their first ballgame of the year yesterday. Warren battled past the Drew Central Pirates in Monticello by a 6-5 score. The victory moves Warren to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in 8AAA play, with a big conference contest looming later in the week against the McGehee Owls.

The Jacks started off fast with a 4 run first inning aided by 4 Drew Central errors.  The Pirates fought back against sophomore starting pitcher Johnny Roper for 2 runs.  The Jacks added two runs to make their lead 6-2.  The 4 run lead was held until the bottom of the 6th when Drew Central fought back to climb within one run at 6-5, aided by a couple of Jack errors and passed balls.  The Jacks loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but couldn't get any insurance runs so it was 6-5 headed into the bottom of the seventh.  Junior Bryan Church quelled any thoughts of a Pirate comeback by striking out the side.

The Jacks were lead by A. J. Avery at the plate, who went 3 for 4 with 3 singles and 2 RBI's.  Five other Jacks also chipped in with hits.  Roper picked up the win for the Jacks by pitching four solid innings.  Bryan Church came in for the last three innings and picked up the save.

www.whsathletics.org wishes the Lumberjacks luck in their nonconference contest.
